The Spartans move up over .500 to 11-10-1 (6-7-1 ECAC East) with the decision. The Nor'easters (4-13-5) settle back to 1-10-3 in conference outings.
With a goal in the 1st (9:11) and another in the 2nd (7:22), Pizzuto had the visitors on top, 2-0. The opening marker was assisted by junior Taylor Steadman; the second was short-handed and unassisted.
UNE converted on that same power play just 38 seconds later to make it 2-1, as sophomore
Emily Corrales scored with an assist going to classmate
Kimberly Gosselin.
Castleton State, however, restored the two-goal cushion at 8:37 of the middle stanza on a goal by junior Rachel Bombardier. Sophomore Hannah Wright and first-year Brianna Keats assisted on the tally.
The Nor'easters came up empty on back-to-back power plays before pulling back within one (3-2) at the 17:20 mark. Corrales netted her second of the night, off passes by first-year
Annie Mullen and Gosselin.
In the 3rd, Big Blue went on its fifth power play with 2:01 remaining in the contest, and pulled the goalie with 0:51 on the clock for a 6-on-4 advantage, but could not find the equalizer before time expired.
Senior Paula Stephens backstopped the triumph for the Spartans with 17 saves. CSC heads to the University of Southern Maine on Saturday (1 p.m.).
For UNE, which entertains No. 4 Norwich University on Saturday at 3 p.m., sophomore goalie
