Box ScoreBIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England Nor'easters scored a goal in each period on their way to a 3-1 non-conference women's ice hockey victory over SUNY Canton Saturday afternoon (Dec. 5) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
After sweeping its series with SUNY Canton (4-7-1), the Nor'easters moved over the .500 mark at 5-4-1. UNE's four-game winning streak is its longest in the four-year existence of the program.
Halfway through the first period, the Nor'easters opened the scoring when
Haley Gorman tipped-in a shot fromÂ
Melissa Boudreau.
Gabby Crugnale also assisted on the goal.
The Roos would even the scoreboard at 16:34 of the frame. Tess Adams notched her team-leading 10th goal, poking home the puck after a scramble in front of the cage. Kat McNeilly and Anna Lagzdina were credited with assists.
The Nor'easters took the lead for good 14:38 into the middle period when Crugnale stuffed home a rebound. Positioned at the top of the crease, Crugnale jumped on a rebound of a blast from just inside the blue line by
Shannon Smith.
Annie Mullen would provide an insurance goal for UNE at 12:28 of the third, intercepting the puck as SUNY Canton tried to clear its defensive zone. Mullen struck immediately, potting a wrist shot from the slot.
UNE held a 35-23 advantage in shots on goal and received 22 saves from
Sydney Helmbrecht , who registered her fourth consecutive win between the pipes.
Rebecca DiNardo had 32 stops for SUNY Canton, which had a good day on the penalty kill, denying the Nor'easters on all seven of their power-play opportunities.
Both teams are idle until after the holidays. UNE returns to action Jan. 2 with a 1 p.m. home game versus Daniel Webster College, and the Roos play a road game Jan. 4 at the University of Massachusetts Boston (1 p.m.).
