Nationally-ranked Norwich blanks Nor'easters, 3-0

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- TheNorwich University women's ice hockey teamreceived goals from three different players en route to a 3-0 shutout of the University of New England in the inaugural New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) game played Friday afternoon (Nov. 6) at the Harold Alfond Forum.

Ranked seventh in the mostrecentUnited States College Hockey Online (USCHO) poll, the Cadets (1-2, 1-0 NEHC)won their first game after dropping a pair last weekend. Norwich advanced to last season's NCAA III NationalChampionshiptitle game.

Norwich got the only scoring it would need at 6:50 of the first whenBryn Labbe fired a wrist shot from the slotunder the blocker of UNE goaltender Sydney Helmbrecht. Robyn Foley assisted on the play.

The Cadets doubled their lead 5:31 into the second while ona power play. Sarah Schwenzfeier received a pass from Rachel Bellio and roofed a shot from the left circle. Taylor Cross was credited with a secondary assist.

Norwich would add another tally seven minutes later when Madison Gallagher intercepted a pass in the neutral zone, carried the puck up the left side, and beat Helmbrecht with a wrister from the left circle.

Celeste Robert needed 15 saves to record her eighthcareer shutout for Norwich, which plays aNEHC road game tomorrow at the University of Southern Maine (1 p.m.).

Helmbrecht finished with 35 stops for the Nor'easters (0-1-0, 0-1-0), who host Castleton University tomorrow at 1 p.m.
