Box ScoreCOLCHESTER, Vt. -- Trailing 1-0 heading into the third period, the University of New England women's ice hockey team scored three unanswered goals to rally for a 3-1 New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) victory over Saint Michael's College Saturday afternoon (Nov. 14) at Cairns Arena.
After a scoreless first period, Amanda Kempainen broke through for the Purple Knights, taking a pass from Erin Dwyer and placing a shot inside the left post. UNE goaltender Sydney Helmbrecht had initially stuffed Dwyer on a breakaway but was unable to corral the rebound.
The shots were tied at 17 after two periods, but UNE outshot the hosts 10-4 in the final frame to earn the victory.
Mary Wirth tied the score at 5:18 when her slap shot found the lower right side of the net. Wirth would then set-up the game-winner as
Julianne Sheehan carried the puck across the slot before snapping a wrist shot into the left side of the goal.
Taylor Fowler added an empty-net goal in the final minute to put the game out of reach for the Nor'easters.
Helmbrecht finished with 20 saves to earn the victory for UNE (1-3-0, 1-3-0 NEHC), which plays back-to-back league games next Friday and Saturday. The Nor'easters host the University of Southern Maine on Friday (4 p.m.) before heading to Franklin Pierce University the following afternoon (3 p.m.).
Abby Burke totaled 24 stops for the Purple Knights (1-4-1, 1-3-0).
