Box ScorePLYMOUTH, N.H. -- Shannon Hickey scored with 2:57 elapsed in overtime to give Plymouth State University a 3-2 overtime victory over the University of New England in a New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) women's game played Friday evening (Nov. 13) at Hanaway Rink.
The Panthers have won two in a row to improve to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in the NEHC, while UNE is now 0-3 overall and in conference play.
Hickey was sent up the left side of the rink on a pass by junior Frederike Brazeau-Lalonde, and Hickey skated through the left circle and lifted a backhander up and over the goalie's shoulder for her first goal of the season and the game-winner.
Freshman goaltender Emelie Lindqvist made 27 saves to earn the win in the PSU goal. Junior
Sydney Helmbrecht made 20 saves for UNE.
The teams traded first-period goals. Senior Kelsey Lynch scored her second goal of the season for PSU at the 13:58 mark, cutting to the middle and firing a wrist shot through Helmbrecht's pad. UNE came back to tie the game in the final minute of the period when freshman
Julianne Sheehan made a nice move around the defense and slipped a shot past Lindqvist from in close for her first of the season.
PSU pulled ahead 2-1 with just 2:27 to go in the second period. Helmbrecht made a nice save on a shot by freshman Kelsey Roy, but junior Lauren Connelly put home the rebound to give the home team a one-goal lead heading into the third.
UNE tied the game at 3:29 of the third period, as a shot by junior
Melissa Boudreau deflected off a Panther defenseman in front and went into the net just inside the right post.
The Nor'easters finished with a 29-23 advantage in shots. Both teams were unsuccessful in two power play tries.
The NEHC slate continues Saturday at 1:00 p.m. with PSU visiting Norwich University and UNE moving on to Saint Michael's College.
