Desirae LeBlanc scored an unassisted marker 42 seconds into overtime, giving the University of New England field hockey team a 2-1 victory over Gordon College in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match Wednesday evening (Oct. 28) in the rain at the Brigham Athletic Complex.
After the Fighting Scots started the extra session an advanced halfway into UNE's territory, the Nor'easters gained possession and turned in the opposite direction. LeBlanc moved with the ball from the midfield, looking multiple times to swing the attack to the right side, but had to settle for a reverse hit slotted just inside the left post for her second goal of the season.
Big Blue moves to 13-6 overall and 10-1 in the CCC, with one game remaining in the regular-season on Saturday (4 p.m.) against Salve Regina University (10-1 CCC). Gordon closes out the year at 5-14 and 3-9 in league play.
UNE had an 11-4 advantage in shots during the opening frame, but could not get one past Fighting Scots goalie Shannon Hicks, who made eight of her 15 saves on the night in the period.
Vonde Saunders put the visitors on the board early in the 2nd stanza (39th minute), receiving a pass from
Hannah Buckley in the middle and notching her 12th tally of the season.
The Nor'easters continued to press forward, towards what would be a 12-3 cushion in shots in the half, but it was Gordon that knotted the score in the 62nd minute. Collette Newcombe inserted a penalty corner and got the pass right back from Marirose Brown to then find the back of the cage.
For Big Blue,
Holly Smith made four saves.
