Box ScoreBABSON PARK, Mass. -- Despite getting out-shot and out-cornered, No. 12 Babson College made the most of its chances and recorded a 3-1 victory over the University of New England in field hockey action Sunday afternoon (Oct. 25) at MacDowell Field.
The nationally-ranked Beavers, who started the year with 13 victories in-a-row before back-to-back losses, improve to 15-2. The setback for the Nor'easters (12-6) brings an end to their five-game win streak.
Babson tallied the only marker on the opening half in the 30th minute, when Staci Swallow converted a rebound on the right side. The hosts had a 4-3 edge in shots during the frame, while UNE owned a 4-1 advantage in penalty corners.
It remained a one-goal difference until the 51st minute, as Julie Mortimer poked in another rebound on the right side. Mortimer struck again with her second goal of the season just 45 seconds later, off a feed from Catherine Gilman, making it 3-0.
The Nor'easters registered eight of last 10 shots in the contest, and trimmed the gap to two in the 60th minute when
Haley Pelletier redirected a drive by
Marge Gardiner into the back of the net.
Kayla Costa came up with six of her seven saves down the stretch, though, to preserve the decision for the Beavers.
For UNE, which finished on top of slim margins in shots (13-11) and corners (11-5),
Holly Smith logged four stops.
Big Blue (9-1 CCC) will close out its four-game road swing with a visit to Gordon College (3-8 CCC) on Wednesday (7 p.m.).
