Big Blue opens season with win over Regis, 154-97

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Kayla Burgess led a balanced and deep University of New England women's swimming team with a pair of event wins as the Nor'easters defeated Regis College, 154-97, on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 17) at the Campus Center Pool.

Big Blue (1-0) and Pride (0-1) each tallied six individual events and the squads split two relay decisions, but UNE had the next fastest swimmer in every race.

Burgess claimed the 50- and 100-butterfly races with times of 29.41 and 1:06.46, respectively. The Nor'easters also received top results from Lindsey Thomsen (100 IM - 1:07.15), Emily Fellows (1000 Freestyle - 12:15.43), Jordan Earley (50 Breaststroke - 35.79), and Emily Chamberlain (500 Freestyle - 5:59.44).

Jessica Higgins won three times on the day for Regis by a combined 0.39 seconds. She edged Thomsen twice, by 0.02 (30.49) in the 50-backstroke and then by 0.35 (1:05.92) in the 100-backstroke. Higgins was also 0.02 in front of Eleni Bautz in the 50-freestyle (26.89).

Ashlyn Deroche supported the Pride with two event wins, including one by 0.60 (59.53) over Bautz in the 100-freestyle.

Another 0.02 spread came in the 100-breaststroke, as Regis' Lucia Llorente-Ruiz out-touched Earley with a 1:18.33 time.

UNE heads to Bristol, R.I. next Saturday for the CCC Invitational.
