Nor'easters end up fifth at state meet

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The University of New England men's cross country team placed fifth to finish in the top half of a competitive field at the 2015 State of Maine Championship hosted by Bowdoin College on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 17).

Bates College won the championship with a team score of 24, followed by Colby College at 45 points. Bowdoin (55), University of Southern Maine (132) and UNE (150) rounded out the Top 5.

CJ Vallie placed 32nd with a time of 26:58 to lead the way for the Nor'easters. Paul Mangiafico (40th; 27:14) was the second UNE runner to cross the finish line, followed by Peter LePage (43rd; 27:19). Matthew Toussaint (49th; 27:40) and Jon Zalman (51st; 27:44) closed the book for Big Blue's scoring contingent.

The individual champion was Silas Eastman of Colby, who circled the eight-kilometer course in a time of 25:10.

The Nor'easters will vie for the Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship on Oct. 31. The event will be hosted by Roger Williams University at Colt State Park in Bristol, R.I.
