Box ScoreBIDDEFORD, Maine -- Sophomore
Shannon Smith scored her second goal of the day 9:42 into the third period, as the University of New England rallied to earn a 2-2 overtime tie with Manhattanville College in an ECAC Women's East ice hockey game Saturday afternoon (Jan. 17) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
The Nor'easters now stand at 4-8-3 overall and 1-6-1 in ECAC East play, while the Valiants are 5-6-4 overall and 4-2-2 in league games.
It appeared as if the teams would play a scoreless first period until each squad tallied in the final minute of the frame. First-year Karly Kapur notched her first collegiate goal with 0:43 remaining in the period, rattling a slap shot off the crossbar and into the cage from the top of the left circle. Senior Sydney Asselstine assisted on the goal.
Smith answered for the Nor'easters just 21 seconds later, skating into the slot before moving to the right circle and burying a wrister near-post. Sophomores Gabby Crugnale and
Richelle Skarbowski were credited with assists.
The Valiants would score the only goal of the middle period when first-year Cassandra Kent cleaned up a rebound of a shot off the stick of senior Aubrey Bachand, giving Manhattanville a 2-1 advantage at 17:30 of the period. Sophomore Jerin Dinkins had a secondary assist.
UNE squared the score at 2-2 midway through the third period. Set up at the top of the crease, Smith re-directed a centering pass by Crugnale from the right corner for her team-leading eighth marker. Junior
Marissa Clifford-Biederman started the scoring play for the Nor'easters.
Neither team was able to come up with the game-winner in the extra session. The Valiants had the best scoring opportunity of overtime, but UNE sophomore goaltender
Sydney Helmbrecht denied a point-blank bid by Asselstine with just over 2:30 remaining.
Helmbrecht registered 32 stops, while sophomore Olivia Drew had 17 saves for Manhattanville.
Both teams play non-league games Tuesday. UNE hosts Colby College at 7 p.m., and Manhattanville heads to Connecticut College for a 7 p.m. start.
