Two early goals send Big Blue past Skidmore

Box Score

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Goals by sophomore David Goff and first-year Christian Rossetti before the midway mark of the 1st period provided all the scoring the University of New England would need to register a 2-0 ECAC East men's ice hockey victory over Skidmore College on Saturday (Jan. 17) at the Saratoga Springs Ice Rink.

The weekend sweep of league outings moves the Nor'easters (6-9-1) to 4-6-1 and into a share of fourth place in the ECAC East standings. The Thoroughbreds step back to 3-12-2 on the year (2-8 ECAC East) with the loss. Big Blue logged a 3-2 overtime win the last time the teams met in November, and have now won the last three against Skidmore.

With 6:57 gone, junior Tom Gildersleeve and sophomore Trevor Fleurent linked passes to find Goff in front for the initial score. Less than two minutes later (8:43), Rossetti doubled the margin off assists by sophomores Danny Antonoff and Chris Harlow.

UNE had a 13-6 advantage in shots during the opening 20 minutes, and that difference nearly held the rest of the way (33-25) while both netminders kept their opponent off the board. For Big Blue senior Colby Drost, the shutout was the third of his career.

Skidmore received 31 saves from Jack McDonald in the contest.

The Nor'easters take a break from league action to visit nationally-ranked Bowdoin College on Tuesday (7 p.m.).
