Emily Corrales scored the game's only goal midway through the 1st period and junior
Samantha Scobee posted 37 saves as the University of New England women's ice hockey team defeated Sacred Heart University, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 10) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
With the win, the Nor'easters improve to 4-7-2 and are now 2-0-2 in recent meetings with the Pioneers. SHU drops back to 5-8-1 on the year with the loss.
Scobee's shutout was the first of her career, and featured a 14-save effort in the 3rd frame, including a kick-stop with 2:25 left in the match as Sacred Heart senior Casey Stathopoulos came down the left side on a break and tried to beat Scobee at the far post.
UNE's goal came 49 seconds into its first power play of the contest at the 10:45 mark of the opening stanza, with Corrales tapping home a slow-moving shot in the crease. First-year
Annie Mullen and sophomore
Kimberly Gosselin registered assists on the score.
Big Blue killed off all four penalties it incurred; three in the middle frame and one more that spanned through the 2nd intermission.
Sacred Heart had an extra skater for the last 1:39 and Stathopoulos won the ensuing face-off to gain possession. After Scobee turned aside the first shot of the closing sequence, the Pioneers final chance just missed as Stathopoulos rang one off the outside of the post.
The Nor'easters resume ECAC East League action next Friday (7 p.m.) at home against Salve Regina University.
For SHU, which visits Wesleyan University on Tuesday (7 p.m.), junior goalie Nicole Magee made 30 saves.
