Strong showing for UNE at Shacklette Invitational

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Under hot and humid weather conditions, the University of New England men's cross country team placed third out of nine schools at the 2014 Shacklette Invitational, an event hosted by Saint Anselm College.

The Nor'easters (83 points) trailed only NCAA Division II entries Merrimack College and Stonehill College, who posted team scores of 38 and 50, respectively.

Junior co-captain CJ Vallie finished seventh overall for UNE, circling the eight-kilometer course in a time of 27:45. Vallie has now been the first Big Blue runner to cross the line in his last nine starts.

Peter LePage narrowly missed placing in the Top 10. The senior registered a time of 28:07 to finish 11th.

Senior Shane Murphy was 18th with a time of 28:31, while first-year Jon Zalman (28:46) and sophomore Paul Mangiafico (28:48) finished back-to-back in 24th and 25th place.

Senior Anthony Fierimonte took individual honors, topping the field of 99 with a time of 26:53.

The Nor'easters return to action next Saturday (Sept. 13) when they host the UNE Invitational at Rotary Park in Biddeford. The men's race starts at 11:30 a.m.
