McDougle's overtime goal gets Babson past UNE

Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Sophomore Kelsi McDougle scored with 6:42 elapsed in overtime to give Babson College a 2-1 win over the University of New England in a non-conference field hockey match played Tuesday evening (Sept. 30) at the Big Blue Turf.

Winners of four of their last five starts, the Beavers improve to 7-4, while the Nor'easters dip to 6-3.

McDougle's first goal of the season came at an opportune time for the Beavers, who drew a penalty corner just before the midway point of the extra session. McDougle took the insertion from senior captain Caroline Malone and pushed the ball just right of center inside the arc before ripping a shot into the cage to send the Beavers home victorious.

The contest started slowly, with neither team producing a shot until Malone scored in the 17th minute. Set up in front, Malone one-timed a crossing pass from first-year Elise Towers for her team-leading seventh marker of the year.

The Nor'easters responded just over five minutes later when first-year Vonde Saunders chipped in a rebound off a shot from sophomore Brooke Marshall that was stopped by Babson goalkeeper Kayla Costa.

UNE had several other quality scoring chances over the final 10 minutes of the half, but Babson sophomore Nicole Smith registered a defensive save off a drive by UNE senior Beth Sullivan, and Costa sprawled to her left to deny senior Erin Bibber on a breakaway with just under a minute on the clock.

The teams would combine for just seven shots the entire frame, with UNE holding a 6-1 advantage in that category.

The second half featured many more scoring chances, as the teams totaled 16 shots and 19 penalty corners for the period. Babson accounted for 12 of the 16 shots, but neither team was able to come up with the game-winner in regulation.

Costa finished with seven saves for the Beavers, while sophomore Holly Smith had six for Big Blue.

The Nor'easters return to action Thursday when they head to Medford, Mass. for a match with No. 5 Tufts University at 5 p.m. Babson hosts NEWMAC foe WPI at noon Saturday.
