Olivia Madore scored off a rebound with just over 12 minutes remaining to lift the University of New England field hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Husson University in non-conference action Wednesday evening (Sep. 3) at the Big Blue Turf.
Madore's goal came just three minutes after the Nor'easters (1-1) had tied things up, as senior
Beth Sullivan drove a shot from the top of the circle into the left side of the cage. Sophomore
Brooke Marshall and junior
Haley Pelletier assisted on the penalty corner play.
With a litle more than four minutes remaining, the Eagles (2-1) had a breakaway chance to get back even, but a diving defensive save by Pelletier stoned Husson first-year Taylor Shaw at the left post to preserve the UNE lead.
In the 1st half, Big Blue sophomore
Nicole Matarozzo opened the scoring in the 8th minute, poking in a rebound near the right post.
The visitors responded with goals just 51 seconds apart to jump in front, 2-1. First, it was senior Annika Durrell putting a shot up high off a feed from junior Olivia Plaisted in the 17th minute, and then it was Shaw converting a redirection at the left post off a cross from sophomore Libby Kain.
UNE tripled the shot attempts of Husson on the night (21-7), forcing first-year Abby Greenleaf into nine saves for the Eagles. On the other end, sophomore
Holly Smith made three stops for the Nor'easters, who have won all four meetings between the teams in Biddeford and now hold a 5-3 edge in the all-time series.
Big Blue takes to Castleton State College on Saturday (6 p.m.) for its next match. Husson travels to Springfield College the same day for an 11 a.m. contest.
