Paul Butkevich carded a 2-over-par 73 to help the University of New England finish in 4th place (623) out of 11 teams at the Maine Intercollegiate Championship, the two-day event that concluded Sunday (Sep. 14) at Bangor Municipal Golf Course. Husson University claimed the team title with a 36-hole score of 597.
The Nor'easters fired a 318 in Round 2 behind the lead from Butkevich, who totaled 150 in all. Senior
Jared Melman (153) came in with a 79, sophomore
Sam Kinasewich (155) had an 83, and sophomore
Ryan Mahoney (170) also recorded an 83. First-year
Mike Richard completed the tournament with a total of 181.
After sharing the top spot in Round 1 with the University of Southern Maine at 295, the Eagles turned in a 302 on Sunday. The Huskies (295-321) took second place at 616, and Bates College (310-309) captured third with 619. Maine Maritime Academy rounded out the top five with 629 (314-315).
Husson's Greg Martin followed his opening round 69 with a 70 on day two to secure the medalist honors.
Big Blue is back in action on Thursday (9:15 a.m.) at Dunegrass Golf Club in Old Orchard Beach, as UNE hosts the 18-hole championship qualifier for the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC).
