NEWRY, Maine -- The University of New England golf team kicked off its season with an impressive performance, placing second out of seven varsity teams at the 2014 University of Maine Farmington Invitational held Thursday (Sept. 11) at Sunday River Golf Course.

The Nor'easters posted a total of 328 to finish behind winner Husson University, which offered a score of 320. Maine Maritime Academy (332), Saint Joseph's College (341), University of Southern Maine (343), Bates (349) and host UMF (356) rounded out the competitors. Thomas College entered the event as a club program.

UNE's strong showing was a result of a balanced lineup. Senior Jared Melman paced Big Blue with an 81, followed closely by junior Paul Butkevich and sophomore Sam Kinasewich, who each shot 82, while sophomore Ryan Mahoney carded an 83 to round out UNE's scoring entries. Sophomore Evan Ryan contributed an 88.

Mike Caron of Saint Joseph's and Maine Maritime's Keenan Kalthaff tied for low individual honors, each firing a 3-over round of 75.

The Nor'easters have Friday off before competing in the Maine Intercollegiate Championship over the weekend. Tee times Saturday and Sunday at Bangor Municipal Golf Course begin at 10 a.m. each day.
