Roger Williams advances with 19-6 victory over UNE

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I. -- The fourth-seeded Roger Williams University Hawks raced out to a 11-3 halftime advantage on their way to a 19-6 win over No. 5 University of New England in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championship opening-round game played Saturday (April 26) at Bayside Field.

The Hawks (10-7) move on to play top-seeded and unbeaten Western New England University on Wednesday. UNE concludes its season with a 9-8 record.

Samantha Davenport and Kristen Pingree each scored five times to lead the Roger Williams attack. McKenna Everding contributed three goals, while Deven Machette and Kelsey Rahilly notched a pair each. Rahilly, Jessica Searl and Mackenzie Logan accounted for 10 assists collectively to set-up half of the Hawks' scoring total.

For UNE, Gina Newsome and Cole Dion each scored two goals. Nikki Smith and Hannah Tavella had one apiece; Tavella wrapped up her career with 231 goals and 280 points to top the program's career list in each category.

After Smith scored 27 seconds into the match, Roger Williams strung together four consecutive markers to assume the lead for good.

Newsome would halt the Hawks' run with a goal 10:40 into the frame, but RWU put together another surge that resulted in five straight goals and a 9-2 lead. Machette found the cage for both of her scores to cap the run.

Dion scored for UNE, then Pingree and Davenport converted for Roger Williams to make the score 11-3 heading into intermission.

The Hawks would score the first three goals of the final frame to dash any thoughts of a Big Blue comeback.

Roger Williams, which received three saves total from Kimberly Bolk and Annie Bartkus, led 38-11 in shots and 23-5 in draw controls. Logan was dominant on the draw, racking up 15 draw controls to help get the RWU attack started.

In addition to her two markers, Dion had two ground balls and three caused turnovers for the Nor'easters. Goalkeeper Courtney Kendall stopped eight shots.
