UNE picks up first CCC win, 15-10 over Salve

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. -- Hannah Tavella and Hannah Warren combined for nine goals to help propel the University of New England women's lacrosse team to a 15-10 win over Salve Regina University in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match played Saturday (March 29) at Gaudet Middle School.

With the victory, the Nor'easters evened their conference slate at 1-1 while improving to 6-3 overall, The host Seahawks fell to 3-6 (0-2 CCC).

Tavella scored all five of her goals before halftime to help the Nor'easters build a 10-6 cushion. Warren finished with four goals for UNE, while Nikki Smith contributed three and Gina Newsome a pair to go with four assists.

Grace Kelly tallied three markers to lead the way for Salve. Abigail Tepper chipped in two goals and four assists, and Karley Melanczak and Gina Tortorici each scored a pair of goals.

The first frame was tight nearly the entire way until the Nor'easters extended their lead to 10-6 on back-to-back goals by Warren in the final 2:41.

Warren would score the first goal after halftime, then the Seahawks scored three of the next four to close within three (12-9). Newsome scored twice and Jocelyn Davee once in the game's final 10 minutes to squelch any thought of a Salve comeback.

Goalkeeper Courtney Kendall recorded nine saves in the first half to record the win for UNE. Lauryn Huck came on after halftime and finished with 10 saves.

Josephine O'Reilly had eight stops for the Seahawks, who led 39-28 in shots.

The Nor'easters have just over 24 hours of rest before hosting University of Southern Maine tomorrow at 3 p.m.
