Tavella, Newsome power UNE past Thomas, 21-11

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Senior Hannah Tavella and junior Gina Newsome combined for 18 points as University of New England defeated Thomas College, 21-11, in a non-conference women's lacrosse match Saturday (March 22) at the Big Blue Turf.

The Nor'easters improve to 5-2 on the season, while the Terriers dip to 2-4. UNE is 3-0 in the all-time series between the two squads.

Tavella tallied a game-high eight goals, including her 200th career marker, which came with 12:06 remaining in the first half. She also finished with a pair of assists to register a career-best 10 points in one match. Tavella now has 248 career points -- one shy of the program's career mark held by Ashley MacDonald '08.

Newsome, who had four goals and four assists, hit the 100-goal mark for her career with 3:06 elapsed in the contest. She is the fifth UNE player with 100 or more goals.

Junior Macki Hill added four goals for Big Blue, which converted 21 of 33 shot attempts, while classmate Hannah Warren contributed two goals and two assists. Sophomore Lauryn Huck came up with 13 saves in goal.

Senior Miranda Tinsman had four goals to lead Thomas. Junior Jennifer Day pitched in with two goals and three assists, and first-year Sophia LaVallee scored twice.

The Nor'easters got off to a strong start, finding the cage six times in the initial 3:23 of the match to take control early. UNE would go on to lead 13-6 at the break, and after scoring the first goal after halftime, held a margin of eight goals of more the entire second frame.

Warren finished with four draw controls and four caused turnovers for Big Blue, while sophomore Erin Nelligan racked up eight draw controls, three ground balls and three caused turnovers for the Terriers.

The Nor'easters open Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play on Wednesday when they head to Beverly, Mass. to take on eight-time defending champion Endicott College in a game starting at 4 p.m.

Thomas, which received five saves from first-year goalkeeper Allie McCarthy, hosts Maine Maritime Academy that same afternoon (4 p.m.).
