Tavella, Newsome lead UNE in win over Husson

BANGOR, Maine -- Senior Hannah Tavella and junior Gina Newsome combined for seven goals to pace the University of New England in a 14-4 non-conference women's lacrosse victory over Husson University on Sunday (Mar. 2) at Boucher Field.

With their second win in as many days, the Nor'easters improve to 2-0 on the young season. The contest was the first of the year for the Eagles.

Tavella had half of her four markers in the opening period, as the visitors got out to a 5-0 cushion before settling on a 5-2 margin at halftime.

After sophomore Katie Cawley began the 2nd frame with her second score, and Tavella made it 7-2, Newsome rattled off three straight goals. A sixth unanswered goal for UNE came with 12 minutes left, as Newsome set-up Tavella to go up 11-2.

Caitlyn Stauffer recorded all four goals for Husson, which ended on the wrong side of a 33-12 difference in shots.

Making the start in goal for the Nor'easters was sophomore Lauryn Huck, who finished with five saves.

The Eagles, who visit nationally-ranked Colby College on Wednesday, received 12 stops out of Kaitlin Dolloff.

Big Blue gets a day off before its home-opener on Tuesday (4 p.m.) against Plymouth State University.
