Late 1st-period burst powers Colby over UNE

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Colby College scored three goals in the final 1:40 of the opening period to start towards a 5-1 women's ice hockey victory over the University of New England on Saturday evening (Feb. 8) at the Alfond Rink.

The Mules (6-11-2) received scores from Jess Barkley, Kailey Buxbaum, and Lauren Guarente late in the 1st frame, while getting 13 saves out of Brianne Wheeler to maintain the advantage.

Big Blue (6-11-4) got on the board nearing the midway point of the contest, as first-year Shannon Smith found the back of the net, with assists going to classmates Emily Corrales and Gabriella Moscato.

On the power play, Colby restored the three-goal cushion with 8:05 to play in the 2nd. Carolyn Fuwa tallied the goal for the hosts.

The Mules notched the final marker of the night with just three seconds remaining in the match, courtesy of Megan Fortier.

Sophomore Samantha Scobee turned in 46 saves for UNE, which was out-shot by a 51-19 margin. Wheeler ended with 18 stops after 60 minutes of work for Colby.

The Nor'easters head for Stevenson University (Md.) on Friday for a pair of games against the Mustangs.
