Postgame Interview
BIDDEFORD, Maine -- First-year
Mary Wirth scored with 2:46 remaining to give the University of New England a 3-2 win over Franklin Pierce University in a non-league women's ice hockey game Friday evening (Feb. 7) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
The victory ended a seven-game winless streak for the Nor'easters, who improved to 6-10-4. Franklin Pierce lost for the first time in 10 outings to fall to 17-3-1.
It appeared as if the contest might to go overtime until Wirth poked home the puck after a scramble in front of the Raven cage. Wirth's first collegiate goal was assisted by first-years
Cassandra Connolly and
Emily Corrales.
Trailing 2-1 heading into the final frame, the Ravens had tied the game at 6:30 of the period on an unassisted goal from sophomore Karsyn Baker. Baker came up with a UNE turnover, skated down the slot and finished off a rebound of her own shot to register goal number 16 on the season.
UNE established its 2-1 lead in the first period.
Jenni Poulin came up big on Senior Day in her final home game, converting a rebound midway through the stanza to open the scoring. Connolly and rookie
Richelle Skarbowski were credited with assists on the play.
The Ravens would answer almost immediately as sophomore Francesca Paciello knocked in a feed from classmate Bryana Harron 32 seconds later.
Big Blue grabbed a one-goal lead at 13:37 when first-year
Gabby Crugnale set up in the low slot and roofed a crossing pass from sophomore
Marissa Clifford-Biederman for her seventh tally. First-year
Amy Curry had the secondary assist.
Sophomore
Samantha Scobee was the winning goaltender for the Nor'easters, coming on late in the first period to record a total of 18 saves. Classmate
Courtney Kendall (Waltham, was the starter and had eight saves before leaving due to an injury.
First-year Noelle White totaled 26 stops for Franklin Pierce, which plays at Saint Anselm College on Tuesday (Feb. 11) at 7 p.m.
The Nor'easters have less than 24 hours of rest before they head to Waterville tomorrow evening to face Colby College (6:30 p.m.).
