Nor'easters storm back to top Stevenson, 4-2

REISTERSTOWN, Md. -- Trailing 2-0 midway through the second period, the University of New England scored four unanswered goals to earn a 4-2 win over Stevenson University in a women's ice hockey game played Saturday (Feb. 15) at the Reisterstown Sportsplex.

The Mustangs got a a pair of goals from Megan Donahue to build their 2-0 advantage. Donahue tallied her first goal with just over two minutes remaining in the opening period, then she doubled the hosts' lead halfway into the second frame.

UNE would string together three consecutive goals before the end of the period to seize momentum. Mary Wirth got Big Blue on the board at 11:25, assisted by Lilly Henjes. Big Blue tied the game three minutes later when Shannon Smith notched a short-handed goal. Marissa Clifford-Biederman and Gabby Crugnale set-up the score. Crugnale would put the Nor'easters on top with just under two minutes left in the period, successfully converting a penalty shot for her eighth goal of the year.

Captain Jenni Poulin added an unassisted goal (her team-best 11th) 2:21 into the final period to give the Nor'easters some breathing room.

Sydney Helmbrecht stopped 30 of 32 shots that came her way to record the win in goal for UNE (7-11-4). Anastassia Nelson registered 21 saves for the Mustangs (8-15-1).

The two teams will face one another again tomorrow morning (11:30 a.m.) before the Nor'easters make the long trek back to Maine.
