Box Score BOSTON -- University of New England junior goaltender
Mason Riley established a school single-game record with 61 saves, but it was not enough to hold off the unbeaten UMass Boston Beacons, who scored a pair of third-period goals to earn a 3-1 ECAC Men's East win Friday evening (Dec. 5) at the Beacons Ice Arena.
UMass Boston, ranked sixth in the most recent United States College Hockey OnLine (USCHO) national poll, improved its record to 9-0 overall and 5-0 in league play. UNE fell to 3-7 (2-4 ECAC East).
With the score tied 1-1, the Beacons got the game-winning goal from Nathan Milam at 9:00 of the third. Stephen Bucco would later add an empty-netter with less than a minute to play to help put the game out of reach.
The Nor'easters put UMass Boston in an early 1-0 hole as first-year
Christian Rossetti took advantage of a screen in front of the Beacons'Â cage to notch his first collegiate goal.
Chris Harlow set-up the play for Big Blue.
Milam drew the Beacons even at 14:35 of the frame, scoring his ninth goal of the season.
The teams would play a scoreless middle period, despite UMass Boston outshooting the visitors 22-8 over the 20 minutes.
Riley, a transfer from Northland College playing in just his second game in a UNE jersey, topped the previous school single-game mark of 59 established by Mike Roper versus Babson College on Jan. 22, 2010.
Zach Andrews needed 20 stops to register the victory for the Beacons.
The Nor'easters will be out to snap a four-game losing streak tomorrow when they face unbeaten and third-ranked Babson College in a 4 p.m. contest.
