CASTLETON, Vt. -- Mary Steadman scored a pair of goals to power the Castleton State College women's ice hockey team to a 5-1 win over the University of New England in an ECAC Women's East game played Saturday afternoon (Nov. 8) at Spartan Arena.
Tori Pizzuto, Anna Daniels and Lisa Kilroy also found the net for Castleton, which improved to 4-0 on the season.
It took the Spartans less than a minute to grab the lead when Kilroy netted her second goal of the year. At the 0:59 mark, Daniels sent the puck across the front of the net, and Kilroy buried it home, making it 1-0 in favor of the hosts.
Castleton continued to control the puck and pressured the opposition, and at the 16:26 mark in the first period, Steadman gave the Spartans a 2-0 lead. Lisa Buratynski fired a shot from the left point that deflected off of Steadman and flew into the back of the net to double the hosts' advantage.
The Nor'easters cut the deficit back to one just under a minute later after Mary Wirth finished a rebound in traffic to make it 2-1 at the 17:31 mark.
In the second period, the Spartans tacked on three goals to grab a 5-1 advantage. Steadman recorded her second goal of the contest 3:59 into the period. The junior forward had a breakaway opportunity and finished her shot into the top shelf to extend the hosts lead to two.
Less than ten minutes later, Daniels knocked in a fourth Castleton goal. Molly Haywood's slapshot from the point was saved by Nor'easters' netminder Sydney Helmbrecht, but Daniels was able to tap in the rebound to make it 4-1.
At the 17:31 into the second, the Spartans added another point to their lead after Pizzuto grabbed her first goal of the season. Hannah Rose's attempt on net was blocked, and Pizzuto gathered the puck, finishing it past Helmbrecht to make the score 5-1.
Jess Cameron picked up her second win of the season between the pipes for Castleton by stopping 17 of the 18 shots she faced. Helmbrecht finished with 31 saves .
The Nor'easters (1-2) will play their home-opener next Friday evening when they host Plymouth State University at 7 p.m. at the Harold Alfond Forum.
