Box ScoreGame Highlight PackageBIDDEFORD, Maine -- First-year Ryan Mulder logged 32 saves to preserve a 3-0 victory for Castleton State College over the University of New England in ECAC East men's ice hockey action Saturday afternoon (Nov. 8) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
With the win, the Spartans (2-1) complete a sweep of opening weekend in league play. Between UNE and Southern Maine on Friday night, Mulder posted 53 stops without surrendering a goal.
The Nor'easters (2-1) drop back to 1-1 in the ECAC East.
Castleton struck with a little more than five minute remaining in the 1st period, as first-year Trevor Hanna gained possession in the defensive end and flipped a clear out to the wing for junior Derek Gingera. After a few strides into the offensive zone, Gingera slid it a pass back to Hanna cutting through the middle and rookie pocketed a shot on the right.
At the 18:19 mark of the initial frame, the Spartans doubled the margin to 2-0, as senior Ryan Frost pounced on a loose puck just inside the UNE blue line and snapped a wrister into the top right corner.
Following a scoreless middle period, Castleton padded the cushion midway through the 3rd. First-year Braeden Moffatt forced a turnover near center ice and skated down the left side before flipping a pass over to classmate Ryan O'Toole on the right doorstep for the finish.Â
For Big Blue, which heads for Saint Michael's College on Friday (7 p.m.), senior netminder
Colby Drost made 22 saves.
The Spartans return home to face Saint Anselm College the same night.
