NORTHFIELD, Vt. -- The No. 3 ranked Norwich University women's ice hockey team received a goal and two assists from Madyson Moore on its way to a 4-0 shutout of the University of New England in an ECAC Women's East game played Friday afternoon (Nov. 7) at Kreitzberg Arena.

Last season's runners-up at the NCAA Division III Championship, the Cadets evened their record at 1-1-1 overall, 1-0-0 in league play. The Nor'easters (1-1-0, 0-1-0) were playing their first ECAC Women's East game after competing as an independent in their first two seasons.

The Cadets got goals from Madison Gallagher, Nicolette Gosselin, Nicole Goebel and Moore, while sophomore goalie Celeste Robert made 11 saves to pick up the shutout.

Gallagher scored her first of the season just under five minutes into the first period when she slipped a puck under UNE goalie Courtney Kendall off assists from Kaycie Anderson and Moore.

Kendall made an initial save on Anderson shot in front of the net but the puck squirted out to the half boards as she scrambled to recover. Gallagher skated down to the puck and slid the puck along the ice, just underneath the outstretched leg of Kendall who was caught in an awkward position facing the net.

Norwich carried the 1-0 lead into the first intermission, outshooting a resilient UNE squad 11-7.

The Cadets added to their lead in the second frame with Gosselin scoring just past the midway point of the game off a scramble in front of the net. From her knees, Gosselin shoveled in her own rebound after Kendall made an initial save on her first shot from just below the right faceoff circle.

Norwich extended the lead to 3-0 with 34 seconds left in the period when Moore shoveled in a rebound on her backhand after Kendall stopped an initial shot from Anderson but couldn't control the puck. Freshman Sarah Schwenzfeier picked up the second assist on the goal.

Moore nearly got her second of the night just under two minutes into the third period but Kendall made a sprawling glove save to rob the NU senior forward.

Goebel scored her first career goal for Norwich at the 15:40 mark of the third period when she slid the puck under Kendall off an assist from Moore to make it 4-0.

Kendall finished with 31 saves for UNE, who dropped to 1-1-0 on the year.

Norwich faces the University of Southern Maine at 3 p.m. on Saturday in another ECAC East contest at Kreitzberg Arena, while UNE will skate at Castleton State College.
