Box ScoreCANTON, N.Y. -- Junior goaltender
Courtney Kendall stopped 22 shots, and the University of New England Nor'easters received goals from four different players in a 4-0 shutout of SUNY Canton in a non-league women's ice hockey game played Sunday afternoon (Nov. 30) at the Roos House.
The contest was the second head-to-head matchup for the teams in a span of less than 24 hours. UNE (3-5-1) and SUNY Canton (1-7-1) had played to a 4-4 tie yesterday afternoon.
The Nor'easters would get the only scoring they would need at 5:51 of the first on a delayed penalty situation.
Emily Corrales controlled a loose puck in front of the SUNY Canton goal and converted her third goal of the weekend series.
Shannon Reynolds, assisted by
Lilly Henjes and
Gabby Crugnale, made it 2-0 at the 16:57 mark, brushing in a shot on the backhand for her first tally of the season.
After a scoreless middle period, Big Blue put the game out of reach with a pair of third-period scores.
Haley Gorman notched her first collegiate goal at 4:56 of the third, then
Abby Kinens scored her first of the season a little more than three minutes later.
Mary Wirth set-up Gorman's goal, and
Alexis Hall was credited with an assist on Kinens'.
The shutout was the first of Kendall's career. UNE held a 38-22 advantage in shots on goal, while killing each of SUNY Canton's four power-play opportunities. Becca Kieffer had six stops in the first period for the Roos before giving way to Rebecca DiNardo, who had 28 stops over the final two frames.
The Nor'easters will conclude first-semester play this Friday and Saturday when they host Stevenson University at the Harold Alfond Forum. The puck drops at 7 p.m. in the series-opener.
