Nor'easters, Kangaroos skate to 4-4 tie

Box Score

CANTON, N.Y. -- Emily Corrales netted her second goal of contest with 2:52 left in the 3rd period to tie things up, as the University of New England pulled even with SUNY Canton for a 4-4 tie in non-conference women's ice hockey action Saturday (Nov. 29) at the Roos House.

It was the second tie in three meetings between the Nor'easters (2-5-1) and the Kangaroos (1-6-1), who will square off again on Sunday (2 p.m.).

Canton, which had trailed for most of the game, struck twice in the opening 5:57 of the 3rd to gain the advantage. Adding to two earlier assists, Abbey Diabo scored 44 seconds into the stanza to make it 3-3, with Lora Ardoin tallying her second helper on the play.

Then, Margret Troiano put in her second marker of the day to provide the hosts with a 4-3 edge. Both sides failed to convert on power play chances before Corrales pocketed the equalizer in the waning moments, with assists going to Gabriella Moscato and Kierra Wright.

UNE got on the board first with 6:15 gone in the 1st, as Shannon Smith notched an unassisted goal. That was all the scoring in the initial 20 minutes, despite Big Blue holding a 15-7 cushion in shots.

Corrales made it 2-0 with 1:23 elaped in the 2nd, only to see Troiano answer four minutes later for the Kangaroos to cut the deficit in half.

Smith scored again, off passes from Marissa Clifford-Biederman and Wright, at the 16:57 mark to up the gap to 3-1, but Robyn Carroll got one back with 75 ticks left in the middle period to get Canton back within one (3-2) heading into the 2nd intermission.

The Nor'easters recorded all four shots in overtime, but could not solve Kargaroos goalie Becca Kieffer again. Kieffer totaled 41 stops in the match.

Sydney Helmbrecht made 21 saves for UNE.
