Box ScoreHOOKSETT, N.H. -- Drew Weigman turned in 43 saves to help SUNY Cortland top the University of New England men's ice hockey team, 3-0, in the opening round of the PAL Stovepipe Tournament hosted by Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 29) at Ice Den Arena.
The Red Dragons (3-5-1) will get the host Penman (a 6-3 winner over Fitchburg State) in Sunday's tournament final. The Nor'easters (3-5) are slated to play the Falcons at 1:30 p.m.
After a scoreless 1st period, in which UNE had a 16-6 advantage in shots, Cortland's Nick Zappia found the back of the net 4:41 into the 2nd, with assists going to Dan Broderick and Jeff Vanzant.
Broderick then opened the 3rd with a goal that made it 2-0 just 28 seconds into the frame. Drazen Zack and Ryan Wagner assisted on the play.
With a little more than three minutes left, Darren McCormick added some insurance with an unassisted tally.
For Big Blue, which finished in control of a 43-26 margin in shots,
Colby Drost made 23 saves.
