Ravens improve to 5-1 with win over Nor'easters

Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The Franklin Pierce University Ravens scored a pair of second-period goals to extend a 1-0 lead on their way to a 4-1 win over the University of New England in an ECAC Women's East game played Saturday afternoon (Nov. 22) at the Harold Alfond Forum.

Winners of five straight, the Ravens improved to 5-1 overall, with the same record in league play. UNE suffered its third consecutive setback to drop to 2-5, 1-5 in ECAC East play.

Franklin Pierce dominated play in the first period, jumping out to an early 1-0 advantage when sophomore Lanie Matsumoto stuffed home a rebound of a shot by junior Francesca Paciello that was saved by UNE sophomore goaltender Sydney Helmbrecht.

The Ravens went on to forge a 14-2 advantage in shots for the frame but were unable to convert after Matsumoto's early tally.

Franklin Pierce added to its lead with a pair of goals in the second. Junior Karsyn Baker made the score 2-0 with a nifty move, taking the puck up the left side before crossing over through the slot and shoveling a back-hand high inside the near post at the 4:25 mark. Sophomore Marisa Ketterman fed Baker, and first-year Alex Brolsma was credited with a secondary assist.

The Ravens pushed their lead to 3-0 at 6:45 of the frame when Brolsma re-directed a slap shot from the point by sophomore Katie Flynn. Junior Sarah Sheils also assisted on Brolsma's marker.

Junior Colleen Doucette gave Franklin Pierce a 4-0 lead at 5:43 of the third, poking home a shot from the right doorstep. Sophomore Nina Danforth set-up the play.

UNE got on the scoreboard with 5:29 remaining as first-year Alexis Hall converted her first collegiate goal from the top of the crease after junior Marissa Clifford-Biederman spotted her with a centering pass. Sophomore Gabriella Moscato got the play started from the neutral zone.

Sophomore Shannon O'Neil stopped 27 of 28 shots to earn the win in goal for Franklin Pierce. She made 15 saves in the final period to help squelch any comeback bid by UNE.

Helmbrecht had 21 saves in 26:45 of playing time for Big Blue. Junior Samantha Scobee came off the bench to make 11 stops the rest of the way.

Both teams are off until after the Thanksgiving holiday. The Ravens will play a pair of home games versus Buffalo State next Saturday and Sunday, while the Nor'easters head to SUNY Canton for contests those same days.
