Box Score GORHAM, Maine -- Katie Couture scored 47 seconds into overtime to give the University of Southern Maine Huskies a 3-2 overtime victory over the University of New England in an ECAC Women's East ice hockey game played Friday afternoon (Nov. 21) at the USM Ice Arena.
The win improved the Huskies' record to 2-3-0 overall and in league play. The Nor'easters dropped their second straight 3-2 overtime game to fall to 2-4-0 overall and 2-3-0 in conference games.
Couture tallied the game-winner on a rebound off a shot by Lynn Kozlowski, who had beaten the Nor'easter defense and was in on a partial breakaway. UNE goaltender Sydney Helmbrecht made the initial stop, but Couture was in the right spot to end the contest.
Trailing 2-0 after two periods, the Nor'easters had rallied with a pair of goals midway through the third frame.
Marissa Clifford-Biederman got Big Blue on the board at 10:24 when her centering pass deflected off the skate of a USM defender and into the cage while the Nor'easters were on the power play.
Emily Corrales was credited with an assist on the play. UNE would tie the score less than a minute later on a long wrist-shot by
Shannon Smith.
Southern Maine scored a goal in each of the first two periods. Kozlowski poked home a shot by Couture in the opening frame, then Couture buried a rising shot from 30 feet out at 6:51 of the the second.
Liz Bergstrom earned the overtime win for the Huskies, stopping 18 shots. Helmbrecht finished with 16 saves for UNE.
The Nor'easters have less than 24 hours of rest before they host Franklin Pierce University tomorrow afternoon. The puck will drop at 3 p.m. at the Harold Alfond Forum.
