The win evens the Nor'easters' overall record at 3-3 while upping their league mark to 2-3. The Huskies, who are winless in five ECAC East games, dip to 1-5 overall. The eight-goal output for UNE broke a school single-game record -- topping a seven-goal performance in a loss to Hamilton College on Jan. 29, 2011.
Things started quietly, with the Nor'easters registering the lone tally of the opening period. Junior
Cassidy April drilled home a slap shot from the right point at 15:40 of the frame for his first goal of the season.
UNE would pull away in the second with three markers. Sophomore
Chris Harlow scored from a tough angle near the goal line to the right of the cage at 13:15, then sophomore
David Goff tallied from the slot less than two minutes later to give Big Blue a 3-0 advantage. Sophomore
Trevor Fleurent completed the scoring in the period at 16:28, converting from the left doorstep off a centering pass.
The Nor'easters continued to pour it on in the final period to win going away. With his team on a five-minute power play, Fleurent registered his second goal of the evening with a tip-in from close range 1:18 into the period. Senior captain
Zeth Zielinski, sophomore
Blaise Healy and junior
Ben Pearl completed the scoring.
SeniorÂ
Jared Melman had three assists to become the Nor'easters' career leader in points (65), surpassing the previous mark of 63 held by
Adam Laite '13. Junior
Ryan Quinn added a pair of helpers for UNE, which held a 36-28Â advantage in shots on goal.
Senior goaltender
Colby Drost turned aside all 28 shots he faced to register his second career shutout.
First-year Kyle Shapiro surrendered six goals and made 22 stops in 47:16 of playing time. He gave way to classmate Nate DelGiudice, who had six saves.
Both teams return to action Tuesday with non-league games. Southern Maine heads to Salem State University for a 7 p.m. game, while the Nor'easters host No. 14 Bowdoin College at 7 p.m.
