Sydney Helmbrecht posted 27 saves as the University of New England downed Plymouth State University, 2-0, in ECAC East women's ice hockey action Friday night (Nov. 14) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
The Nor'easters (2-2), who are now unbeaten in three all-time contests against the Panthers, move to 1-2 in their initial season as a member of the ECAC East. PSU slips back to 1-3-1 (1-2 ECAC East) with the setback.
Despite being out-shot 13-8 in the opening stanza, Big Blue netted all it would need during the first 12 minutes. With 5:38 gone, Moscato stuffed home a rebound at the right post to put the home side in front. Sophomore
Gabby Crugnale assisted on the power play marker.
At the 11:06 mark, the cushion doubled as UNE cleared the defensive zone through sophomore
Shannon Smith and junior
Marissa Clifford-Biederman, finding Corrales streaking up the middle. After skating past and curling around the lone defender, Corrales flipped one up over the glove of Panthers junior goalie Alyssa Altschuler.
Both netminders did well to keep their opponent off the board the rest of the way. Helmbrecht now has credit for UNE's only two shutouts in a little over two years as a program -- both of which have come against the Panthers. On the opposite end, Altschuler made 30 stops for the visitors.
The Nor'easters stay at home for a date with Saint Michael's College on Saturday (3 p.m.). Plymouth State will be back in New Hampshire hosting a 2 p.m. contest against No. 3 Norwich University.
