Colby rallies from two-goal deficit to top UNE

Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Junior Misha Strage scored an unassisted goal 5:27 into the 2nd half to give Colby College a 3-2, come-from-behind victory over the University of New England in non-conference field hockey action Tuesday evening (Oct. 7) at the Big Blue Turf.

The Mules (6-4) trailed 2-0 after the opening 12 minutes of play, but a pair of scores in the latter stages of the period leveled the contest heading into the break.

Colby junior goalie Sarah Evans made 13 saves to backstop the win, while getting help from classmate Elizabeth Zusi, who kept an early deficit at 1-0 with two defensive saves.

In the 26th minute, the Mules got on the board when a bouncing ball through the middle was pushed along by junior Megan Fortier and finished near the left post by senior Kaitlyn O'Connell.

Just under four minutes later, Colby sophomore McKayla Blanch found the back of the cage with an unassisted tally from the right side.

Strage put in a rebound during the 41st minute to slide the visitors in front, and that margin held until the final whistle, in spite of UNE maintaining a 19-10 advantage in shots and 10-8 in penalty corners for the game.

After surrendering the initial two shots and a corner to the opposition, the Nor'easters (7-5) came out firing and senior Hannah Cutting notched her first collegiate goal after a little more than seven minutes. After inserting a corner, Cutting moved into the middle and redirected a hit off the stick of classmate Hannah Warren.

Sophomore Desirae LeBlanc doubled the margin at 11:41, driving home a shot from the right side of the circle off a feed from senior Beth Sullivan. By a Mules timeout just past the midway mark of the frame, shots were 11-2 and corners were 6-1 in favor of Big Blue.

Sophomore Holly Smith turned in five saves for UNE, which heads for CCC-foe Nichols College on Saturday (1 p.m.).

Colby is also on the road the same day (11 a.m.), paying a visit to No. 8 Amherst College.
