Jared Melman followed up his 77 from day one with a 75 in Round 2 to lead the University of New England men's golf team to a sixth place finish at the University of Southern Maine Fall Classic. The 36-hole event concluded Monday (Oct. 6) at Gorham Country Club.
Endicott College (598) captured the team title with back-to-back scores of 299, edging the host Huskies by three (601) -- the same margin from after the opening 18 holes.
Austin Teal of the Gulls topped the individual leaderboard with a pair of 72s, one stroke better (145) than Zach Temple of Castleton State College and Greg Martin of Husson. Martin posted the best number of the tournament on day two -- a 2-under-par 69.
The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth took third as a team (608) following a 14-stroke improvement from the first round. The Spartans were also 14 strokes lower than day one to finish at 614, and the Eagles rounded out the top five at 620.
Big Blue wound up with a total of 638 after a 318 in Round 2. Behind Melman's 152, sophomore
Ryan Mahoney (163) turned in a 79 on Monday. Junior
Paul Butkevich (165) had an 81 on the afternoon, and first-year
Mike Richard (163) went for 83. Sophomore
Sam Kinasewich (164) logged an 85 in the second round.
The Nor'easters are now off for three weeks until the their season-ending event -- the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championship at Captains Golf Course in Brewster, Mass.
