It is a sixth straight win for Big Blue (13-5), which has now come out on top of the Huskies (8-11) in each of the last seven meetings.
The Nor'easters controlled the action right from the start, and led 8-1 in shots before breaking through for the initial tally in the 16th minute. Senior
Hannah Cutting sent a penalty corner insert to classmate
Beth Sullivan at the top of the circle, and Sullivan directed it right back for Cutting to one-time into the cage from the left side. UNE's 1-0 cushion remained at intermission, though shots (13-3) and corners (8-0) were largely in its favor.
Sullivan and Cutting reversed roles to make it 2-0 in the 38th minute, as Sullivan received the corner insert from Cutting and rolled it to her backhand for a hit through the middle into the right corner.
Southern Maine got one back in the 51st minute when first-year Kaylie Andrews finished one in the crease. Sophomore Michaela Demers registered an assist on the play, taking a loose ball in the middle of the circle and pushing it towards goal for Andrews.
UNE restored its two-goal advantage in the 56th minute on a goal by first-year
Vonde Saunders. Senior
Hannah Warren started the play by weaving her way into the middle and slotting a pass through a crowd in front. First-year
Olivia Madore was on the other end of the feed and nudged it towards the right post for Saunders to convert.
Big Blue finished with a 23-5 edge in shots and 18-2 in corners, forcing USM sophomore Amanda Kasbohm into 14 saves for the Huskies.
The Nor'easters, who head for MIT on Wednesday (6 p.m.), got two stops out of sophomore
Holly Smith in the UNE goal.
