Nor'easters place 5th at State Championship

FARMINGTON, Maine -- The University of New England men's cross country team placed fifth out of 11 teams at the 2014 State of Maine Championship hosted by the University of Maine Farmington on Saturday (Oct. 18).

Led by individual winner John Stansel (26:22), Bates College took the championship with a team score of 26. Bowdoin College was second with 38 points, followed by Colby College at 64. University of Southern Maine (118) was the other team to top the Nor'easters' total of 143.

CJ Vallie added to his stellar season, recording an eight-kilometer time of 27:35 to place 24th overall. Peter LePage finished close behind at 27:49 to grab the 29th spot.

Big Blue also received scoring performances from Paul Mangiafico (36th - 28:07), Shane Murphy (44th - 28:34) and Jon Zalman (53rd - 29:10). For Mangiafico, it was the second time this season he was the third UNE runner to cross the finish line.

The Nor'easters are idle until Nov. 1 when they will compete for the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) championship. Start time for the event at Gordon College is 1 p.m.
