BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Sean Sullivan (Worcester, Mass.) scored with 1:51 elapsed in overtime to give the University of New England Nor'easters a 5-4 win over Morrisville State College in a non-league men's ice hockey game played Saturday (Jan. 4) afternoon at the Harold Alfond Forum.

Sullivan's game-winner came off a scramble in front of the Mustangs' cage. The senior captain poked home the puck to make the best of the broken play, recording the marker in his first game in the lineup after missing eight contests with an injury.

The game was a back-and-forth affair, with neither team leading by more than one goal at any stretch.

After a scoreless first period, UNE grabbed a 1-0 lead just 25 seconds into the second frame when sophomore Sam Vikich (Vancouver, British Columbia) converted from the slot.

The Mustangs drew even four minutes later. First-year John Doyle (New Lowell, Ontario) notched his first of two goals, ripping a shot just under the crossbar from a nearly impossible angle near the bottom of the right circle.

The Nor'easters established the lead once again halfway through the period when first-year David Goff (Gulfport, Fla.) went streaking up the middle of the ice and found the cage for his fourth goal.

Morrisville tied the game once again at the 14:46 mark. With the Mustangs on the power play, first-year Jordan Carvalho (Brampton, Ontario) rifled home a wrist-shot from the high slot to complete the scoring for the period.

The visitors would take their first lead of the afternoon at 1:28 of the third when Doyle converted from the left circle.

That advantage was short-lived, however, as UNE first-year Trevor Fleurent (Biddeford, Maine) pushed a pass from Goff top shelf to knot the score with 3:00 elapsed.

Vikich lit the lamp for UNE once again at 8:56, sliding a rebound just inside the right post with the Nor'easters on the power play.

Morrisville State would force the extra period when senior Ryan Marcuz (Richmond Hill, Ontario) rushed up the right side and put home a shot from the right circle, tying the game at four with 6:38 remaining in regulation.

UNE had the only two shots on goal of the overtime and trailed in that category (37-34) for the contest.

Junior Colby Drost (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) had 33 saves in goal for UNE to improve his record to 5-3-1 on the season. Goff finished with four points (1 goal, 3 assists) to pace Big Blue's offense.

Senior Christopher Azzano (Oshawa, Ontario) came up with 29 stops for the Mustangs (3-8-1), who play at Nichols College next Saturday (Jan. 11).

The Nor'easters (5-7-1) hit the ice again Tuesday (Jan. 7) when they head north to take on non-league foe Bowdoin College at 7 p.m.
