BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Senior captain
Jenni Poulin (Pembroke, N.H.) scored at 4:10 of the third period to help the University of New England overcome a one-goal deficit, as the Nor'easters and SUNY Canton skated to a 1-1 tie in non-league women's ice hockey action Friday evening (Jan. 24) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
The two teams were unable to get into the scoring column during the first two periods, but the Kangaroos finally broke the drought very early in the third. After the opening face-off, first-year Rhea Coad (Wheatfield, N.Y.) centered the puck from the right circle to sophomore Karlee Cree (Hogansburg, N.Y.), who one-timed the feed from her position in front of the cage for her ninth goal of the season.
It didn't take long for the Nor'easters to respond, however, as Poulin placed a wrist-shot from the left circle just inside the far post. First-year
Melissa Boudreau (Lombard, Ill.) set-up Poulin's ninth marker of the year.
UNE nearly came away victorious in the closing stages, but Roos' rookie goaltender Shayna Dominique (Mistissini, Quebec) denied a point-blank offering from Big Blue sophomore
Shannon Reynolds (Belmont, Mass.) with under two minutes remaining.
Dominique, who finished with 38 saves after entering the game midway through the first period, also had a couple of quality stops in the overtime period to preserve a tie for SUNY Canton (6-12-3).
First-year
Sydney Helmbrecht (Grand Rapids, Minn.) had 20 stops for the Nor'easters (5-9-4), who held a commanding 44-21 advantage in shots on goal.
Both teams will face-off against one another tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Harold Alfond Forum.
