Box Score
BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Franklin Pierce University scored three times in the second period to break open a scoreless game on its way to a 3-1 victory over University of New England in non-league women's ice hockey action Saturday (Jan. 18) evening at the Harold Alfond Forum.
A night after dropping UNE 5-2 on its home ice, the Ravens completed the sweep to improve their record to 14-2-1. The Nor'easters now stand at 5-9-3.
After a scoreless first period, Franklin Pierce opened the scoring at 7:03 of the middle frame. First-year Marisa Ketterman (Palmer, Alaska) took a pass from sophomore Francesca Paciello (Clinton, N.Y.) and pushed home a shot from close range. First-year Nina Danforth (Stratford, Conn.) was credited with a secondary assist on the play.
The Ravens would double their lead while down a skater. Sophomore Hayley Arnold (Barre, Vt.) broke out of the defensive zone and rushed up the right side before weaving into the slot and firing the puck into the cage for an unassisted tally at 13:53.
Franklin Pierce added another less than four minutes later. With her team on the power play, sophomore Colleen Doucette (Wakefield, Mass.) whistled a wrist-shot from the slot that grazed the left post and went into the net.
It appeared as if the Ravens would keep UNE off the scoreboard until first-year
Melissa Boudreau (Lombard, Ill.) converted late in the game for her first collegiate goal. Already on the power play, the Nor'easters pulled goaltender
Courtney Kendall (Waltham, Mass.) for another extra skater, and the plan proved successful when Boudreau drove a shot from the right point through a screen and into the goal. Boudreau's marker at the 18:35 mark was set up by classmate
Mary Wirth (South Elgin, Ill.).
Rookie netminder Noelle White (Corona, Calif.) was strong between the pipes for the Ravens. She stopped a total of 25 shots, including a brilliant glove save on Wirth's breakaway in the first period.
Kendall played a solid game for Big Blue, racking up 31 saves.
Franklin Pierce has just two days off before hosting Saint Michael's College on Tuesday (Jan. 21) at 7:30 p.m.
The Nor'easters will entertain SUNY Canton next Friday and Saturday (Jan. 24-25). Friday evening's contest is slated to start at 7 p.m.
