UNE storms back, falls just short at Castleton

Box Score

RUTLAND, Vt. -- Trailing 3-0 just over seven minutes into the contest, the University of New England rallied to tie the game before falling 6-5 to host Castleton State College in the opening game of the Rutland Herald Invitational played Friday afternoon (Jan. 10) at Spartan Arena.

The Spartans (8-5-0) advance to Saturday's championship tilt and will face College of the Holy Cross, a 4-3 last-minute winner over Salve Regina University. The Nor'easters (5-6-3) will face the Seahawks in the consolation game at noon Saturday.

With the score tied at 5-all, Sabrina Hosner notched her first collegiate goal at 7:35 of the third to give the Spartans the margin for victory. Hosner's marker came just 21 seconds after UNE first-year Emily Corrales had tied the contest.

Anna Daniels scored a pair of goals to lead the way for Castleton. Joining Hosner in the scoring column were Nicolene Jensen, Lisa Kilroy and Taylor Steadman.

Senior captain Jenni Poulin and sophomore Marissa Clifford-Biederman each scored twice to help the Nor'easters overcome their early 3-0 deficit.

The hosts were dominant to start the game, tallying three times over the initial 7:22 to assume control. Clifford-Biederman scored her first goal of the season at the 12:36 of the opening period to get UNE on the board and help Big Blue stem the tide.

Daniels would score her second goal of the afternoon 10 seconds into the second frame before UNE reeled off three consecutive scores to tie the game. Poulin sandwiched a pair of goals around a marker by Clifford-Biederman to account for Big Blue's comeback.

Jensen added three assists to finish with four points. The sophomore forward has totaled four goals and four assists in Castleton's two wins over UNE this season. Goaltender Jess Cameron had 16 saves and allowed four goals before giving way to Paula Stephens, who saved 10 shots on goal over the final period-and-a-half to register the victory.

Sophomores Samantha Scobee and Courtney Kendall saw time between the pipes for the Nor'easters. Scobee had a pair of saves before Kendall came on to make 32 stops the rest of the way.
