GORHAM, Maine -- Four different players scored as the University of New England overcame an early one-goal deficit for a 4-1 victory over the University of Southern Maine in non-conference field hockey action on Saturday afternoon (Sep. 7) at Hannaford Field.
The triumph was the first of the young season for the Nor'easters (1-1) and rookie head coach
Danielle Collins, while the Huskies suffered their second straight setback to fall back to 2-2 overall. It marked the sixth straight meeting that UNE had topped USM.
After Peyton Dostie put the hosts in front with a goal in the 13th minute, UNE senior
Hannah Tavella leveled things up just 2:11 later off a pass from junior
Hannah Warren.
Winning ways... |
UNE extended its win streak against Southern Maine to six games on Saturday. During the run, the Nor'easters have won in two very different ways. While a pair of meetings have featured overtime results (2010 and 2012), Big Blue has outscored USM in the other four by a 16-4 margin. |
The contest remained 1-1 until the 27th minute, when senior
Casey Clark gave Big Blue the lead for good.
Warren and senior
Brittany Liptak added scores in the 39th and 59th minutes to provide insurance to seal the win.
The Nor'easters finished with a 12-8 edge in shots and 11-3 cushion in penalty corners. First-year
Holly Smith was called upon to make four saves in the UNE net.
USM goalie Amanda Kasbohm registered four stops in 41 minutes of playing time, before Kayla Kennedy turned aside two shots the rest of the way.
Big Blue will conclude its string of three road games to begin the season on Tuesday (7 p.m.) with a date at Colby College.
