Erin Bibber scored a pair of first-half goals, and the University of New England defense limited Salve Regina University to just four shots in a 6-0 Commonwealth Coast Conference field hockey shutout Saturday (Sept. 28) evening at Gaudet Middle School.
The Nor'easters remained unbeaten in conference play at 3-0 (4-4 overall), while the Seahawks suffered their first CCC loss (2-1) to fall to 3-5 overall.
Junior
Hannah Warren got the Nor'easters out of the gate early, drilling home a hard shot from the top of the circle just 5:47 into the match to give UNE a 1-0 advantage.
Bibber would score the first of her two goals off a feed from senior
Casey Clark at the 17:06 mark, then tally an unassisted goal just over six minutes later to extend the Nor'easters' lead to 3-0.
Senior
Hayley LaPointe connected with the bang board 20 seconds before the first-half horn to give Big Blue a hefty 4-0 cushion heading into intermission.
Rookies
Brooke Marshall and
Nicole Matarozzo each notched their first collegiate goals in the second half to provide the final margin of 6-0.
First-year goalkeeper
Holly Smith needed just one save to record her second shutout for the Nor'easters, who held margins in shots (18-4) and penalty corners (7-3).
Seahawk goalkeeper Murphy McCann had seven stops.
UNE will be looking to run its CCC record to 4-0 on Wednesday when the Nor'easters travel to Nichols College for a 7 p.m. match.
