Nor'easters pair up for 2nd at Southern Maine Cup

GORHAM, Maine -- For the third straight season, the University of New England claimed a runner-up finish at the Southern Maine Cup, which is a modified-format event. The host Huskies circled the par-71 track at Gorham Country Club on Friday (Sep. 27) in a total of 205 to register a 12-shot victory.

The Nor'easters (217) were followed by Saint Joseph's College (226), and the University of Maine Farmington (231) rounded out the field.

Played annually as a break from the traditional style of collegiate golf, the Southern Maine Cup pairs teammates for an 18-hole round that consists of three sections -- six holes in the format of best ball, six holes of scramble, and six holes of alternate shot.

Senior Andy Emery and sophomore Paul Butkevich led UNE with a 1-under-par 70, while senior Mat Brown and first-year Sam Kinasewich came in with 71. Senior Tyler Moody and first-year Ryan Mahoney completed the Big Blue scoring with a 76.

Brad Myers and Tom Murray from Southern Maine paced all duos with a 4-under score of 67.

The Nor'easters will host the UNE Invitational on Tuesday. Tee times at Cape Arundel Golf Club begin at 11 a.m.
