MANCHESTER, Mass. -- Thanks to three sub-80 rounds, the University of New England golf team finished third out of seven teams at the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Qualifier held Thursday (Sept. 19) afternoon at Par 70 Essex County Club.

By virtue of placing in the Top 4 of the event, the Nor'easters advance to the 2014 CCC Championship to be hosted by Western New England University April 26-27. The Golden Bears earned the right to host the 2014 Championship by posting a team score of 306, four strokes better than Nichols College. The Nor'easters followed at 312. Endicott College (314) claimed the remaining advancing spot.

UNE was paced by a pair of first-years -- Ryan Mahoney with a team-best round of 75 and Sam Kinasewich, who shot 78 in his first collegiate match. Sophomore Paul Butkevich fired a 79, while senior Mat Brown (80) rounded of Big Blue's scoring competitors. Senior Andy Emery added an 85.

Colin Whitney of Nichols College distanced himself from the field to earn medalist honors. Whitney breezed around for a two-under round of 68. Matt Fontaine (74) of Western New England was second, with UNE's Mahoney and WNE's Patrick Donahue tying for third with 75's.
