Hannah Tavella tallied a second-half goal and the defense completely shut down Gordon College as the University of New England field hockey team opened up Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play with a 1-0 victory on Wednesday afternoon (Sep. 18) at the Brigham Athletic Complex.

UNE (2-3, 1-0 CCC) ends a two-game skid with the triumph, while the Fighting Scots drop to 4-2 overall (0-1 CCC). The Nor'easters have now taken the last eight meetings between the squads, improving to 10-5 in the all-time series.
After a scoreless opening half, in which Big Blue held a 7-1 cushion in shots, Tavella netted the first shot of the final period with 4:01 elapsed in the frame.
The Nor'easters surrendered just one shot (blocked) and Gordon's only penalty corner following halftime. Offensively, UNE registered 15 shots and nine corners in the contest.

Holly Smith denied the lone shot that came her way for UNE. Fighting Scots goalie Anna Bury recorded 10 saves on the other end of the field.
Big Blue returns home for a CCC date against Western New England University on Saturday (5 p.m.).
