Nor'easters wrap up play at Maine Championship

BANGOR, Maine -- Led by a round of 75 by senior Mat Brown, the University of New England men's golf team posted a 323 total in the second and final round of the Maine Intercollegiate Championship played Sunday (Sep. 15) at Bangor Municipal Golf Course. Husson University cruised to the title for the eighth time in the last 10 seasons, while the Nor'easters took 8th place.

The Eagles were better in Round 2 by five shots (295) to end with a score of 595 and a 22-stroke victory. Defending champion the University of Southern Maine placed second at 617 (318-299). The University of Maine Presque Isle (636), Bowdoin College (638), and Bates College (648) rounded out the top five teams.

Husson also took home the medalist honor, courtesy of Porter Gervais, who backed up his 3-under 69 from Round 1 with a 3-over 74 to win by seven shots over Colby's Geoff Sullivan.

Brown matched his career-low to finish with a two-day score of 166. First-year Ryan Mahoney had the lowest total in the tournament for Big Blue at 161 (81-80). Seniors Tyler Moody (172) and Andy Emery (172) both improved on their Round 1 scores, coming in with 83 and 85, respectively. Sophomore Paul Butkevich (169) completed the UNE lineup with a Sunday total of 87.

The Nor'easters are back in action on Thursday at the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Invitational qualifying event, which will be played Essex County Club in Massachusetts.
