Nor'easters open season with 5th-place finish

NEWRY, Maine -- The University of New England golf team got its season underway with a fifth-place finish at the University of Maine Farmington Invitational held Thursday (Sep. 12) at Sunday River Golf Course.

UNE posted an aggregate score of 323 to narrowly miss finishing in the top half of the eight-team field. Husson University put together an impressive total of 296 on the challenging par-72 layout. University of Southern Maine and Maine Maritime Academy tied for second at 318, and host UMaine Farmington (321) followed closely behind.

Senior tri-captain Mat Brown paced the Nor'easters with a five-over round of 77. Classmate Andy Emery also broke 80, carding a score of 79. Sophomore Paul Butkevich (83), first-year Ryan Mahoney (84) and graduate student Tyler Moody (86) rounded out the UNE lineup.

Senior Bill Hutchins of Husson was the medalist, firing an even-par round of 72.

The Nor'easters hit the links again this weekend at the two-day Maine Intercollegiate Championship, to be contested at Bangor Municipal Golf Course.
